OROVILLE - Third-ranked Butte College used a strong running attack and a disciplined defense to earn a 34–14 home victory over No. 21 (tied) City College of San Francisco on Saturday afternoon.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Roadrunners broke through midway through the second when Niall Raby scored from four yards out. Butte added to its lead just before halftime as quarterback Amare' Cooper connected with Ben Wheeler for an 11-yard touchdown, sending the Roadrunners into the break with a 14–0 advantage.
The Roadrunners extended their lead in the third quarter. Lane Garner converted a 30-yard field goal, and Raby scored his second touchdown of the day on a 10-yard run. That put Butte ahead 24–0 before San Francisco finally answered early in the fourth with a 1-yard score from JT Foreman.
Any comeback hopes were short-lived. Less than a minute later, Dion Coleman broke free for a 38-yard touchdown run, reestablishing control for Butte. Garner later added a 23-yard field goal to cap the scoring for the Roadrunners. San Francisco's Michael Dabney closed the game with a 25-yard touchdown run in the final minutes.
Butte finished with 304 yards of total offense, including 153 on the ground. Coleman led the way with 66 rushing yards and a score, while Raby added 53 yards and two touchdowns. Cooper threw for 151 yards and one touchdown.
San Francisco totaled 335 yards but was slowed by penalties and turnovers. Clark-James threw for 178 yards, while Foreman rushed for 60 yards and a touchdown. Dabney added 31 yards and a late score.
Defensively, Jude Mendoza led Butte with seven tackles. Ty Williams and Jonah Flowers each recorded interceptions. For San Francisco, Sonny Vitale paced the defense with seven tackles and three stops for loss.
