SAN MATEO – The College of San Mateo is the new top choice of California Community College Football Coaches Association members in this week’s JC Athletic Bureau state poll. The reigning Northern California champions took 16 first-place votes and totaled 513 points to move up one spot after defending state champion Riverside City College lost in the final minute at Golden West, 37-36, and fell from No. 1 to No. 5 this week. Golden West (2-0) jumped to third (from eighth).
Four of last week’s top six teams suffered weekend setbacks, causing a complete shake-up in this week’s rankings.
Mt. San Antonio (2-0) received three first-place votes and totaled 495 points to move to No. 2 (from fourth) following a 22-14 win over previous No. 6 Ventura (1-1), which fell to tenth. Butte (2-0) is No. 4 this week, up from No. 7, after downing Laney, 30-14.
San Mateo (2-0) recorded its first shutout since a 55-0 victory over Riverside in the 2022 3C2A state championship game, defeating visiting Reedley, 23-0. The Bulldogs next visit century-old rival Modesto JC (2-0), which is No. 6 this week following an impressive 51-14 win over formerly No. 15 Santa Rosa JC.
Added to the ‘new” top ten this week are No. 7. Fresno CC (2-0) and No. 8 San Diego Mesa (2-0) – both headed to contests with other top teams.
This week, non-league competition continues with several important Saturday contests:
No. 1 San Mateo at No. 6 Modesto, No. 2 Mt. SAC at No. 11 Hancock, No. 8 SD Mesa at No. 3 Golden West,
No. 4 Butte at CCSF, No. 5 Riverside at No. 16 El Camino, No. 7 Fresno at No. 9 American River, No. 10 Ventura at No. 18 Cerritos.
