Just when you thought it might be safe to assume several top-ranked teams were in good standing, the past week in women's volleyball proved once again that any team has a chance on a given night to score an upset...even in the North Region.
Folsom Lake (12-5) did just that in shocking American River in five sets, allowing the Falcons to shoot up five spots to #17 on this week's CCCWVCA State Women's Volleyball Top 25. ARC (13-3) only fell a few spots to #5 and had a 16-set win streak snapped in that Big 8 Conference loss. Folsom Lake is on a 6-match win streak.
Folsom Lake setter Kendall Hughes, who was a Co-State Player of the Week selection, has led the team's run as one of the state's more consistent point-feeders. She recently passed the 1,000 assists mark in her career.
Cabrillo (7-6) recorded an upset sweep over now #8 Fresno City and moved up three spots to #21 while the Rams because of their awesome strength of schedule only fell one spot to #8. The Seahawks have won six of their last seven matches.
Down South, Saddleback (11-2) jumped on to the rankings for the first time at #25 thanks to a 5-set upset over Irvine Valley (9-4), which dropped three slots to #12.
Feather River (22-1) has more than proven its stranglehold on the #1 ranking after a fabulous day of volleyball on Saturday. The Golden Eagles started by sweeping Cabrillo, then defeating Fresno in four sets at the Cabrillo Classic. Taking a few hours off, FRC took on NCAA Division III UC Santa Cruz and won in four sets to extend its winning streak to 20 in a row.
Feather River also stretched its Golden Valley Conference win streak to 44 matches with a GVC-opening victory over Lassen last week.
San Joaquin Delta is steady at #2, winning 15 straight sets as the Mustangs lead the Big 8 currently at 5-0. Delta is paced by Co-State Player of the Week in outside hitter Savannah LeBarre, who totaled her season-highs with 17 kills and 21 digs in a sweep over Sacramento City.
Despite Fresno losing two matches at the Cabrillo mini tourney, the Rams continued their amazing streaks of now 151 consecutive wins and 123 sets won in a row in Central Valley Conference play with sweeps over Columbia and Merced.
San Mateo (12-3) moved up a spot to #3 with a 4-set win over #16 Hartnell (12-8) while Ventura (14-1) maintains the South's top rating at #4. At #6, Grossmont continues its tear on a 9-match win streak to lead the PCAC at 6-0 while San Diego Mesa (14-2) climbed a spot to #7.
At #9, Mt. San Antonio (13-3) has won seven consecutive matches and lead the South Coast Conference at 5-0 while #10 Pasadena City (11-4) made its way back to the Top 10 (moved up two steps) thanks in part to the ripple effects of Saddleback's upset win. PCC head coach Mike Terrill picked up his milestone #100 victory in a Lancers sweep over Cerritos.
Sequoias (13-6) is up a spot at #13 and has won nine of its last 10 matches. Canyons (10-7) made a huge leap up six spots to #15 with a sweep over now #20 Santa Monica. The Corsairs keep winning 5-set matches, taking one from Desert and are now 6-1 in contests that go the distance. SMC is led by state block kill leader Rain Martinez, the South's State Player of the Week. Read about all three of this week's POTW selections here: Week #7 Top Players
Santa Barbara City (9-7) has won five in a row and rose three slots to #14.
