Santa Ana pitcher Emily Rosas, Butte outfielder Alexis Detwiler garner 3CFCA accolades
SAN BERNARDINO - As we come down to the final month of the regular season, we have seen the state’s top softball teams work to separate themselves from the rest of the field.
And while every victory in a sport like softball is credited to the team, there are often individuals who have performed to help their teams vault to the top of the standings.
In the south, Santa Ana College is nipping on the heels of State No. 1 Mt. San Antonio for the top spot in the rankings. And one part of the Dons success this season has come on the strength of the arm of pitcher Emily Rosas, this week's 3CFCA Pitcher of the Week.
Last week, the sophomore pitcher continued her dominance from the circle by going 4-0 – all shutouts – striking out 35 and notching her fourth no-hitter of the season. Against Golden West, she matched the school’s single-game strikeout record with 13. And each time she takes the ball in the circle, she is adding to the school’s single-season strikeout record, entering this week’s action with 185 on the season. Overall, she has a state-leading 23 wins (against three losses) with a 0.77 earned run average.
In the north, Butte College has been near the top of the polls all season. And one of their players doing lots of damage with the bat this year has been outfielder Alexis Detwiler., the 3CFCA Player of the Week.
In a span of three games last weekend, Detwiler caught lightning in a bottle at the plate. In the back half of a doubleheader against Feather River, she was 2-for-2 with a double, triple and three runs batted in. Then, the next day in a doubleheader against Shasta, she went a combined 7-for-9 at the plate, with five home runs (four in Game 2) and a combined 10 RBI. Her performance vaulted her into the top five in the state in RBI for the season, and she currently leads the team with a .457 batting average.
Other notable performances:
Lili Navarro, Santiago Canyon: The left-handed hitting Navarro was 8-for-14 with a double, homered twice, scored five times, and added six RBI.
Briana Goris, Mt. San Antonio: The state’s top overall hitter continued her torrid pace at the plate, going 9-for-13 with a home run, four doubles, and six RBI for the top-ranked Mounties.
Sierra Banuelos, San Bernardino Valley: In the Wolverines’ only game last week, the second baseman was 3-for-4 with a double, run, and three RBI, while adding five assists and two putouts. She recently committed to the University of Saint Katherine to continue her softball career.
Macey Grigsby, Fresno City: She was 7-for-15, including two doubles, while driving in nine runs as Fresno went 4-0 last week.
Destyne White, Fresno City: White was 7-for-16 with a double, two triples, five runs scored and seven more driven in. She also hit a game-winning walk-off home run in the tenth inning of a win over Sacramento City.
Davia Hines, College of the Desert: She was 10-for-16, with five doubles and six RBI in five games for the Roadrunners, and also contributed in the field playing three different positions and recording eight putouts and three assists.
Yeraldine Carrion (P), Imperial Valley: Threw three complete games, striking out 35 while only walking three in 21 innings pitched.
