Bakersfield, CA - The Fullerton College Softball team staved off elimination on Saturday morning when they defeated conference rival Cypress College 6-3. The win kept the Hornets alive in the 2019 CCCAA State Championships, and eliminated their conference rivals.

The two teams would trade runs in the opening frame. Fullerton sophomore Sabrina Anguiano briefly gave the Hornets a two run lead in the top of the second with a double to left. Cypress' sophomore Vanessa Ayala would cut the lead back to one with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth, but doubles by sophomore Lulu Vasquez and Sarah Rengifo in the fifth gave the Hornets a 6-2 lead. The Chargers would manage a solo home run in sixth, but that was it for the weekend for Cypress.

Freshman Jessica Lopez ( 20-6) would get the win for Fullerton giving up only three hits, allowing three walks, and striking out five Cypress batters. Aguiano and Rengifo each went 2-for-4 with a run and a pair of RBIs. For Cypress (38-9) Lesley Bojorquez was 1-for-3 with a pair of runs.

With the win Fullerton (38-8) stays alive in the State Championships and will play the loser of SoCal #1 Mt. SAC vs SoCal #3 Palomar. That elimination game is scheduled for 2:30 PM on Saturday afternoon at Bakersfield College.
