Riverside City ascends throne to No. 1; Butte climbs after knocking off previous No. 1 San Mateo
JC Athletic Bureau Release (PDF)
SAN MATEO – Riverside City College is the new No. 1 choice in this week’s JC Athletic Bureau poll of California Community College Football Coaches Association members. The undefeated Tigers (5-0) moved up one spot this week after defending 3C2A state champion College of San Mateo lost for the first time in 11 outings, 30-28, at Butte College. Butte jumped two spots to No. 5 this week. San Mateo’s 3-TD fourth-quarter rally against the Roadrunners fell short by a failed 2-point conversion margin and the Bulldogs dropped into a sixth-place tie with American River this week. All three finished pre-league play at 4-1. Most teams take a bye this week before all are involved in league games, Oct. 12-14.
The Tigers also took over the No. 1 spot in the vote of sports information directors in the CCCSIA poll this week. The top five teams are the same in both rankings with Riverside City, City College of San Francisco, Mt. San Antonio, Fullerton and Butte occupying the spots.
Riverside is 2-0 in the National Southern League, following a 41-17 win over new National Division member Mt. San Jacinto. The 2022 state runner-up Tigers next entertain Grossmont on Oct. 14. CCSF, which finished a “perfect” non-league campaign with a 49-35 victory over now No. 14 Sierra (and earlier defeated Butte), opens Bay 6 play hosting San Joaquin Delta.
A dozen teams resume play on Thursday evening, Oct. 12. They include a couple of top 20 matchups in Southern California: No. 20 San Diego Mesa at No. 4 Fullerton in the Southern League and No. 17 College of the Canyons at No. 10 El Camino in the Northern League. San Mateo begins defense of its Bay 6 crown with a Friday (Oct. 13) contest at Laney.
