Riverside City continues to dominate football polls with Mt. SAC, Golden West and San Mateo in chase
Previous Polls:
SAN MATEO – Unbeaten Riverside City College (9-0) remains the unanimous No. 1 selection by California Community College Football Coaches Association members in this week’s poll by the JC Athletic Bureau – heading into final regular season games. Riverside survived a shootout with formerly No. 5 Cerritos last week.
The Tigers scored the winning touchdown with 27 seconds remaining on a 16-yard run by Cam Leofa to complete a 7-play 72-yard final drive to lock-up the Central League’s state playoff berth. Riverside closes at last place Chaffey on Saturday. No. 7 Cerritos (7-2) hosts No. 2 Mt. San Antonio (8-1) for second place and possibly the south’s at-large playoff berth.
Saturday’s Southern League title decider has No. 3 Golden West (8-1) at No. 5 Fullerton (8-1), with the loser also in contention for the at-large state berth. All six Northern League teams are 2-2 going into finales, with a 3-way title tie in the offing. The team earning the tiebreaker is expected to be the lone NL college advancing to the 4-team south playoffs.
In the north on Saturday, No. 4 College of San Mateo (8-1) matches 3-1 Bay 6 League records at reigning state champion City College of San Francisco (6-3) for a likely title tie with No. 6 Laney (7-2) -- which only needs to win at Chabot (2-7) to grab an expected playoff berth (to join north RPI rankings leader CSM). Laney has the tiebreaker in a title tie with CCSF. No. 9 American River is finished and will be 7-3, having already been awarded a NorCal League ending forfeit from College of the Siskiyous. Joining the Beavers in the playoffs will be Saturday’s Valley finale survivor matching second place Modesto (3-1, 4-5) at leader No. 12 ranked Fresno CC (4-0, 6-3). Modesto gets a state playoff berth with a win; is not even bowl eligible with a loss.
State regional 4-team playoffs will be conducted Nov. 26 and Dec. 3. The north winner hosts the Dec. 10 championship game.
American Division: While play in the south concludes this week, the north still has two weeks left. Unbeaten No. 17 Feather River (8-0) has a Nov. 19 Pacific 7 finale with co-league unbeaten Redwoods (6-2 overall). The Golden Coast league winds-up with current 4-0 leaders West Hills (5-3) at Merced (7-1) Saturday -- then Merced playing at 3-1 Monterey Peninsula (4-4 overall) on Nov. 19. In the south, Metro League champion No. 17 Citrus (9-0) finishes at winless LA Southwest and expects to face either American Pacific champ No. 24 Santa Barbara CC (8-1) or Mountain League winner No. 22 Mt. San Jacinto (8-1) in the south’s American Division title game on Nov. 26.
