College of San Mateo moves to top spot in JC Athletic Bureau poll, joined by City College of San Francisco in CCCSIA rankings
SAN MATEO – After a one-week “hiatus”, College of San Mateo is back atop the poll of California Community College football coaches, conducted by the JC Athletic Bureau. Reigning CCCAA state champ Riverside City (3-1) had its pacesetting 15-game win streak interrupted by Golden West, 37-20, and dropped from the top spot to No. 7 this week. Six National Division teams, two with make-ups pending, remain undefeated.
The top spot had a bit more of a logjam atop the poll of sports information directors, conducted by the CCCSIA, with San Mateo joined by NorCal rival City College of San Francisco.
San Mateo (4-0) totaled 244 points to take the top spot in the coaches poll, ahead of San Francisco (4-0 and 236 points). CSM downed former unbeaten No. 6 Fresno CC, 38-27, for its 19th straight regular-season victory. CCSF defeated then-No. 12 American River, 51-14. Ventura (4-0) blanked Chaffey, 60-0, and is the top Southern California team (third in the poll with 231 points) – just ahead of Northern league foe College of the Canyons (4-0 and 219 points). All teams in the top 25 changed positions, an unusual occurrence.
Golden West made the biggest jump in the CCCSIA rankings thanks to its upset at Riverside, moving from No. 16 all the way to No. 6. San Mateo and CCSF both garnered 210 points but San Mateo picked up six of the nine first-place votes. CCSF, Ventura and Mt. San Antonio each had one. El Camino, ranked No. 21, 22nd-ranked Laney, and Cerritos and Pasadena City - tied for No. 25 - all moved into the top 25 this week.
Most teams conclude non-league play this week, although there will be some make-ups on the Oct. 9 “bye” date due to postponements caused by Covid issues. National Division makeups Oct. 9 include Mt. San Antonio at Saddleback, Diablo Valley at Sierra, and Shasta at West Hills.
