San Mateo (Oct. 28, 2019) – The tight race for the top spot in the JC Athletic Bureau poll of California Community College football coaches continues this week with College of San Mateo back as No. 1, by one point. CSM had tied for first with Riverside last week after holding the top spot by one digit the previous week. San Mateo, following a 29-14 win at defending state champion Laney Saturday, garnered seven first place votes and 317 points. Riverside, a 56-13 winner over Golden West, received five top nods and 316 points.

The California Community College Sports Information poll is also a two-team race at the top with just five points separating No. 1 Riverside (247 pts) and No. 2. San Mateo (242). The Tigers picked up eight of the 10 first-place votes with the Bulldogs receiving the other two.

Back in the JCAB rankings, Saddleback, the third National Division unbeaten (all are 7-0) had the remaining No. 1 vote and was a solid third place choice with 302 points after topping Orange Coast, 58-7. Modesto broke out of a tie for fourth place to hold the No. 4 spot alone with 280 points this week, with Ventura now down a place to No. 5 with 271 points.

The top seven teams all won over the weekend, all except state defensive leader San Mateo scoring more than 54 points. Things could change a bit this Saturday. Three first place showdowns loom in the jockeying for post season state berths: No. 11 Fresno at Modesto in the Valley League, No. 6 Canyons at Ventura in the Northern League, and No. 7 Butte at No. 8 American River in the NorCal League. San Mateo plays at Diablo Valley on Friday night and Riverside visits No. 18 Southwestern on Saturday. No. 12 Long Beach will also have a say the final two weeks against Canyons and Ventura. Riverside plays at Saddleback in a Nov. 16 Southern League finale.

No. 15 Chaffey (8-0), remains the top American Division teams and has a state-leading 18-game winning streak.
