SACRAMENTO – Five state championships and two other top-three finishes helped highlight another strong athletic year for Mt. San Antonio College, which captured the 2023-24 NATYCAA Cup all-sports competition among 3C2A schools, it was announced on Tuesday.
Besides winning the title for the 10th straight year, the Mounties were once again crowned winners of the Daktronics Cup State Associations Divisions competition between the 3C2A and Northwest Athletic Conference and were third in the race for the Learfield Cup which is contested between all community colleges in the country.
Mt. San Antonio was recognized for its achievements by NATYCAA (National Alliance of Two Year College Athletic Administrators) during last week’s NACDA Convention in Las Vegas.
Colleges are awarded points based on their teams’ final positions in post-conference competition with state championships worth the most points (20). Each college’s top-five men’s and top-five women’s team results count toward the school’s overall point total. Complete standings, scoring criteria, and history of the NATYCAA Cup is available on the 3C2A website,. This year's complete here. 3C2A results with both the overall and sport-by-sport finishes are also available at that site.
“Congratulations to Mt. San Antonio College on another terrific year,” said 3C2A Executive Director Jennifer Cardone. “The depth of the athletic program is to be commended. But, I’m also excited for the many 3C2A programs who not only scored well in our race but placed among the best programs in the country.”
Impressively, 13 3C2A schools scored at least 100 points in the NATYCAA Cup race. Riverside City, which won a state championship in football and was second in men’s track and field, and women’s water polo, was runner-up with 162 points. Third-place Orange Coast won titles in women’s basketball and men’s volleyball, and was runner-up in women’s tennis and men’s swim and dive to help with its 146.5 points.
Three of Mt. San Antonio’s five countable men’s scores came from state championships in cross country, wrestling, and track and field. The Mounties added a third-place showing in men’s swim and dive (18.0 pts) and a regional semifinal appearance in football (14.5) to round out their 92.5 men’s points.
State titles in cross country and track and field helped spark the women’s scoring, which also benefitted from a runner-up finish in women’s golf (19.0), a fourth-place in softball (17.0) and a sixth-place performance in swim and dive (15.0).
Altogether, the Mounties amassed 183.5 countable points. Mt. San Antonio scored points in 19 of the 24 sports included in the program, including 10 of 12 on the men’s side.
Sierra College (133.5) was the top finisher among Northern California schools, finishing fourth, and was followed by San Diego Mesa (130.5), Long Beach City (129.5), Fresno City (127.5), Modesto (124.5), American River (121.5) and West Valley (119.5) in the top 10. El Camino (118.0), San Joaquin Delta (114.5) and Ventura (106.0) were the other programs to top the century mark in points.
Mt. San Antonio, Riverside and Orange Coast went 1-2-3 in the Daktronics Cup while 10 of the top 12 and 19 of the top 30 all came from the 3C2A. The Learfield Cup also had a distinctive 3C2A flair. Besides third-place Mt. San Antonio, which was only 1.4 points behind winner Rowan College of South Jersey, the 3C2A was also represented in the top 10 by sixth-place Riverside and 10th-place Orange Coast. A dozen 3C2A members were in that race’s top 30.
