Laney makes move into No. 2 slot behind Fullerton in CCCSIA poll; Top four teams all 4-0

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The ranks of the unbeatens are dwindling and the California Community College Sports Information Association's football poll released on Tuesday reflects that. With Butte's upset of previously unblemished City College of San Francisco on Saturday, the top of the rankings shows Fullerton College, Laney College, Ventura and College of the Canyons owning the top four seats with sparkling 4-0 records. But the number of udefeated teams in the top four might be reduced even further with a pair of key top-10 showdowns this weekend.

Fullerton, which extended its winning streak to 23 games with a close 19-14 win over No. 9 Southwestern last weekend, holds on to its top ranking while receiving all 11 first-place votes cast. Laney took advantage of CCSF's loss to move up to No. 2 with Ventura and Canyons, tied for fourth last week, having split with Ventura going to No. 3 and Canyons staying at No. 4.

But those places will likely see some kind of movement next week since Ventura will head south to face Fullerton while Laney, the last NorCal team without a loss, will host No. 8 Butte - fresh off of its upset over CCSF - on Friday.

Riverside City (3-1) blanked then No. 11 Long Beach City (2-2), 47-0, and was rewarded with a two-spot jump in the poll to No. 5 and was followed by College of San Mateo (3-1), CCSF (3-1), Butte (3-1), Mt. San Antonio (3-1) and Cerritos (3-1) in the top 10. Southwestern (3-1) slipped one spot to No. 11 with American River, which fell 27-21 at Modesto, falling six spots to No. 12. Santa Rosa (3-1), Mt. San Jacinto (4-0) - the lone unbeaten American Division team in the state - jumped four positions to No. 14 while Chabot (3-1) is No. 15. Citrus (3-1), Chaffey (3-1), Long Beach, San Diego Mesa (3-1) and Modesto (2-2) round out the top 20.

Nine of the top 10 teams in the poll will face either a ranked opponent, or a team receiving votes, this weekend. Canyons will face a test against Golden West (2-2) which is coming off a 13-11 victory against then No. 15 Bakersfield after giving Fullerton a run in the opener, losing 30-27. The Rustlers' only other loss was 27-21 to current No. 19 San Diego Mesa on Sept. 8. Riverside takes on S.D. Mesa, College of San Mateo goes to No. 20 Modesto and Mt. San Antonio travels to Saddleback, another team that received votes this week.

The only other game on the slate between ranked opponents comes with No. 18 Long Beach City at No. 10 Cerritos.
