De Anza Defeats Fresno City, Heads To State Championship
On Tuesday the De Anza College Women's Badminton team defeated 2nd place Fresno City College 16-5 to capture its second consecutive Coast Conference Championship. With an 8-0 Coast Conference record and a 10-0 overall record, De Anza has earned the Northern California berth in the CCCAA State Team Championship match on Thursday, May 8th.
The team championship match will be a repeat of last year's final between De Anza and San Diego City College. San Diego City College is also undefeated this year at 7-0
The Dons ride a 22 match win streak going back to the 2012 season.
De Anza is led by Sheung Wei "Pinky" Li, Alice Liu, Jessica Dinh, and Christina Ja, the #1-4 players who have collectively lost only one singles match this season. The foursome also forms the top two doubles teams who are undefeated to date. In 2013, De Anza finished 1-2 in the doubles state championship and "Pinky" is riding a nearly two-year undefeated run as defending Singles Champion.
The Dons head to Fresno this weekend for the Coast Conference singles and doubles championships, which will determine entries into next week's singles and doubles State Championship on Friday and Saturday, May 9-10th.
De Anza will host all state championship events next week commencing with the Team Championship on Thursday, May 8th.
