SACRAMENTO, CALIF. - East Los Angeles College football student-athlete Antoinette “Toni” Harris, whose story of determination and perseverance caught the nation’s eye during this year’s Super Bowl and helped earn her an athletics scholarship to play at Central Methodist University in Missouri, will be the featured keynote speaker at the 23rd Annual California Community College Athletic Association Convention at the Hilton Concord later on March 27.

Harris was a defensive back for the Huskies in 2018 and is believed to be the first woman to play a skill position in the sport at the collegiate level. The sophomore from Detroit, Michigan has set her sights on the NFL and has displayed a level of determination that caught the attention of Toyota, resulting in the car manufacturer featuring her in a commercial that ran during the Super Bowl.

“Ms. Harris has been one of the great stories in college athletics this year and is a great example of how the opportunities provided by California community colleges can help student-athletes fulfill their dreams,” said Carlyle Carter, Executive Director & CEO/President of the CCCAA. “She has an inspirational message that will resonate with our membership and we’re looking forward to her delivering our keynote address.”

Harris collected three tackles this year, including one for a 24-yard loss against College of the Canyons in October, and two in the season finale versus Moorpark College. She had several scholarship offers before signing a letter of intent last month with CMU, which competes at the NAIA level.

The CCCAA Convention runs from March 25-29. It brings together administrators, coaches and affiliate organizations for a week’s worth of professional development, celebratory banquets and networking.
