CCSF WINS THIRD STRAIGHT MEN’S TRACK TITLE; CERRITOS IS WOMEN’S CHAMP

City College of San Francisco is the first Northern California community college to win three consecutive state men’s track and field championships.

The Rams won the concluding 4 x 400 meter relay Saturday night at Bakersfield College Memorial Stadium to win the 2006 California Community Colleges / Commission on Athletics championship with 85 points, ahead of Moorpark (81) and Sacramento City College (79).

Cerritos College (of Norwalk) won its second women’s state title, scoring 89 points to finish ahead of Moorpark (80) and Mt. San Antonio (65). Sacramento CC, which had won a NorCal record three women’s titles, failed to claim a fourth straight crown but still finished fifth among the 41 scoring teams with 55 points.

Cerritos previously won the championship in 1981.

Gadayan Leads CCSF Men Again:

CCSF’s Francis Gadayan repeated as state men’s 800 meter champion in 1 minute, 52.31 seconds.

He was the Rams’ only event champion last year. This time the Rams also had the 400 meter hurdle winner, Jeremy Jones, in 52.70. Jones and Gadayan were on the 4 x 400 meter relay, which included Ameer Tillman and Desmond Morris, and ran 3:12.47 for the victory.

Woodny Turenne of College of the Sequoias (Visalia) won the 100 meters in 10.46 and was second in the 200 in 20.82 to be voted the outstanding male runner. Demein White of Long Beach won the 200 in 20.76.

Romualdo Sanchez of Los Angeles Trade-Tech was the top individual scorer, taking the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:32.10), the 5,000 meters (15:16.19) and the 10,000 meters (32:04.81). (The 10 K was run Friday.)

Rex Bridgeforth of Moorpark took outstanding male field event honors, winning the triple jump (49-9) and placing second in the long jump (24-2). Joshua Muwwakkil of Cerritos won the long jump at 24-4 1/2.

Laney’s Williams Dominates Women’s Sprints:

Charonda Williams of Laney College (Oakland) was the top women’s track performer. The freshman easily won the 100 meters, in 11.75, and the 200 meters, in 23.94

Tai Battle of Moorpark took women’s field event honors. She won the discus throw (165-0) and the hammer throw (181-11), and was third in the shot put (41-4 3/4) – behind two teammates. Aubrey Baxter was the shot winner at 45-1 3/4.

Taylor & Webb Win For Cerritos:

Jacqueline Taylor of Cerritos won the heptathlon with 4,499 points, with teammates taking third and fourth to give the Falcons an early lead in the team battle. Yasmin Webb won the 400 meter hurdles in 1:02.27 and also ran on the Falcons’ second place 4 x 400 meter relay team (3:54.82). American River won the 4 x 4 in 3:52.56. Sherrale Dilworth ran third in both sprints (12.05 and 24.45) and anchored both of the Falcons’ relays. They finished third in the 4 x 100 event in 47.51, won by Mt. San Antonio in 47.18.

The 2007 state championships will be held on College of San Mateo’s new Mondo track.

Notes: Previous CCSF men’s team titles: 1958, 1973, 2004, 2005. Only other NorCal teams to win men’s championships: Merritt (1969 & 1970); San Jose (1975 & 1976)
