The final entrant into the 2000 Hyundai-California Fast Pitch Softball State
Championships is College of the Sequoias, who upset second-seeded Shasta, 6-1, in
the regional finals at Redding Tuesday (May 9) morning. Sequoias was seeded 15th
in the 16-team Northern California Regional.
Two of the three Northern California Regional playoff sites were able to complete
play on Monday (May 8) after Sunday's rain-outs, with Sacramento and West Valley
advancing to the championships May 12-14 in Clovis/Fresno, joining top-seeded Merced,
who advanced Sunday.
Sacramento won its own four-team tournament, while West Valley, seeded 12th in
the 16-team field, pulled the second-biggest upset of the Northern California region
by taking the tournament at Sierra.
The finalists from the South are ready to roll into Friday’s (May 12) opening
round at Buchanan Softball Complex in Clovis. The eight-team, double elimination
tournament switches to Bulldog Diamond on the campus of Cal State Fresno for the
championship game(s) Sunday (May 14).
Three of the South’s top four seeds–top-ranked Long Beach, Palomar, and three-time
defending state-champion Cypress–won their regionals. Santa Ana, seeded seventh,
scored the only upset in the south, knocking off No. 2 Fullerton twice to advance.
