Compton men and women open with shutout victories as CCCAA soccer season gets underway

Lopez nets two in as Tartars blank Imperial Valley, 4-0

COMPTON, Calif. - Freshman Maria Lopez netted two of the Tartar women's soccer goals in the team's season opening 4-0 win on Friday evening.

Lopez earned both goals in the first half, counting her first in the eighth minute and her second in the 32nd minute. Her sister, freshman Jenifer Lopez earned the assist on the first goal, while freshman Julissa Gamboa set her up for her second.

Gamboa picked up another assist on sophomore Barbara Najera's goal in the final seconds of the game.

The Tartars posted 30 shots and eight corner kicks, while freshman Rosalyn Ascencio played all 90 minutes for the team in the goal while counting three saves.

The women's soccer team remains home, hosting LA Valley on Tuesday, Aug. 29 at 5 p.m.


Araux leads Tartars to season-opening shutout of Cuyamaca, 3-0

COMPTON, Calif. -  Sophomore Brian Araux counted a pair of goals in the team's season opening 3-0 shutout of Cuyamaca on Friday afternoon.

The Tartars outshot the Coyotes 17-8, counting four corner kicks. Sophomore goalie Larry Sanchez tallied three saves, all coming in the second half.

Sophomore Ivan Vasquez started the scoring off a free kick from the left side, connecting just inside the far post in the 24th minute. Araux added one goal in the 36th minute, unassisted, to help the Tartars to a 2-0 lead going into the locker room at the half.

Araux widened the gap the 51st minute on rebound on goal off a free kick on the near side by sophomore Ignacio Carrillo.

The Tartars head to Southwestern College next on Tuesday, Aug. 29 for a 4 p.m. start.
